Testimonials

“David's multiple exposure photographs offer a timeless visual beauty which draws the viewer in to examine and question the layers beyond the surface. Landscapes are presented in a way that they both reflect in the past, capture the present and give suggestions of the fragility of an environments future.”
Stef Mitchell, Artist

"David is ... exploring the time based medium of photography beyond the traditional use of the camera. His perspective relates to the abstractions of painters as opposed to photographers, though the influence and contextual referencing to Man Ray seems an obvious connection. David sees light and colour from a painter's view point of view and is therefore dealing with painterly issues. His work layers multiple images and is therefore constructing and developing a dialogue with the history of photography and the history of painting."
Kane Cunningham BA Hons, MA, Artist and Course Leader BA Hons in Fine Art

New Work - Summer 2008

Jehan is David Yates. His art developed out of Punk/DIY ethics of the late 1970's, which he still tries to incorporate in his work. A survivor in Thatcher's Britain, David spent the 1980's in temporary care jobs, signing on and playing in garage bands.

In the 1990's David developed a huge repertoire of skills, through Community Arts work, ranging from traditional batik and willow weaving to digital video and sonic art. He organised and delivered over 300 arts projects to young people. In the early 2000's David managed and developed larger arts projects such as Leeds Centre for Indian Music and Dance and Wyvern Arts, where he organised festivals, gigs, workshops and exhibitions. He also curated film programmes for Leeds International Film Festival Fringe and exhibitions throughout Europe.

David began working with cameras in March 2007 under the mentorship of Ron Sluik. In 2008 he received an Arts Council award to develop his creative practice and establish a Community Darkroom in North Yorkshire.
